Why Lowbrow ?

Lowbrow is a cult movement in artistic circles.

Why Lowbrow Blues ?

Middlebrow means appealing to people with conventional tastes, and Highbrow  means a learned person. So Lowbrow is an excuse to unlearn conventional ways of listening to the Blues. An alibi against the mainstream, using unconventional techniques and formations to produce a more brute type of blues. It is not without reason that Gerry Joe Weise's Lowbrow Blues Tours have had formations and sounds close to the following groups like Hound Dog Taylor & The Houserockers (2 guitars & drums), James Blood Ulmer's Electric Church (guitar, violin, drums), Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion (2 guitars & drums), The Black keys (guitar & drums).

When I went down to see Gerry Joe Weise, I was expecting a whole lot of traditional blues, which he executed on a small scale, the major part though were their exciting new originals. The concert poster and flyer claimed "Lowbrow Blues", which can be translated as a fusion of blues and other music with a rough edge, while still staying funky thanks to the drums which kept a steady beat.     Juan Torres, Periodico, Barcelona Blues Club Spain 4 Feb 97.

If you haven't seen Gerry Joe Weise's new act, you certainly have to catch him next at the Biker's Cafe. His recent tour concerts have had a lot of success with rock-blues consumers across Germany. Gerry Joe Weise has played with B.B.King, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, and has been billed on major European blues festivals. A repertoire of classics and originals, performed in an alternative blues style, with influences from Australian World music.     Süddeutsche, Biker's Cafe Munich Germany 15 Nov 96.

A vigorously virile concert performed by Gerry Joe Weise and his funk-beat drummer at Antonio's. Non-stop guitar action from this fine musician from "down under", who plays blues influenced by hard-rock and jazz, which these days seems to be the tendancy amonst the youngsters. Gerry Joe Weise was born in 1959, does that make him one of the first to play the "New-Blues", there is no proof of that, but he definitely is one of the movements better exponents. He is actually importing his self-titled "Lowbrow Blues" around Europe on a 8 date tour.     Paola Ferri, Quotidiano, Antonio's Milan Italy 1&2 Feb 97.

Gerry Joe Weise has the know-how to keep the blues alive while boiling the Kelvin sclae in a rock attitude. Damn right he has the essence of the blues at his fingertips. Modern originals from the Australian Sydney guitarist, and his colleague, fellow Aussie on drums, hypnotized the Stan's Pub audience.     K.C., Tagblatt, Stan's Pub Kolding Danemark 23 Nov 96.

Gerry Joe Weise completely illuminated by the blues, is on a mission to spread the word, or should I say the music. In fact he is touring Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain and Portugal with his power duo, guitar-vocals and drums. Gerry Joe is known in both circles, that is in traditional and modern fusion blues, where anything goes, which is just what he is committed to. Take for example his song "Lowbrow Jungle Blues", which is at the crossroads of where Bo Diddley meets John McLaughlin meets Muddy Waters, is like planting cotton fields in the middle of Silicon Valley.     Tagezeitung, Cafe Wasser Innsbruck Austria 31 Jan 97.

Apart from filling in guitar duties and playing several metropolitan dates with local band Hazy Jane, Sydney guitarist and vocalist Gerry Joe Weise is actually on a duo tour performing what he calls "Lowbrow Blues" with Brad Edmonds on drums. They have played a dozen dates in Melbourne, catch them next at the Casino.     Herald Sun, Casino Melbourne Australia 8 Dec 99.
